A Little Bit
About Us
WHO WE ARE
The New England Exotic Bird Sanctuary, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation made up of a group of people dedicated to the health and happy lives of all exotic birds. We take in any exotic bird who needs a home and give the bird good food, a well cared-for environment, love, and as much freedom as possible.
We believe that birds don’t belong in cages, but since exotic birds are already here and it isn’t possible or safe to send them to their native habitats, they deserve at least the best life they can have in captivity.
Our birds are fed top quality pellets and seeds as well as organically grown fruits, vegetables, grains and beans . They live in free-flight aviaries where possible or in the biggest cages possible. Most of those in cages are allowed “out” time every day.
Exotic birds are the birds most people think of as pet birds or “cage birds,” like parakeets, cockatiels, finches, canaries and parrots. Many of these birds are colorful, fun to look at, and entertaining. People buy birds for these qualities and then many later realize that they also need to be fed, kept comfortable, given attention and love, and even taken to the veterinarian sometimes. Or they discover that they don’t really want pets they may have for the rest of their lives, and decide to give them up. Or some life event forces them to give up their beloved pet.
That’s where we come in.
We are happy to take these birds, give them a good home, and use our situation to help entertain and educate anybody who’s interested. People who visit us and people we visit can learn about the birds’ native habitats, their place in the world’s ecosystem, their food preferences and needs, their social interactions, and how to take care of their own birds. As they learn about the birds, people can develop respect for the various species and their abilities and intelligence.
OUR GOALS
As we’ve acquired more and more birds, we’ve come to desire to house them all in a manner more suited to their needs. We wish to acquire a large piece of land where we can build habitats for our birds. There, people will be able to see the birds, ask questions, learn from other available visual aids, and interact with some of the birds, all in an environment that is comfortable for the birds as well as the visitors. We feel there is great importance in the knowledge to be gained from experiencing a close-up, first-hand view of the exotic birds’ lives as it has been in their native habitats. We feel that this experience will give, more than anything short of a trip abroad, a real understanding both of their place in the wild world and their needs as pets.
WHERE YOU COME IN
We of course always accept disease-free birds to live with us. In order to help us realize our vision, as well as to take care of the birds who are here, we welcome donations of money, food, including organically grown vegetables, fruits and grains, cages, brooders, incubators, and other supplies. Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments or to send donations. We can be reached via e-mail or snail mail at PO Box 241, Greenfield, MA 01302.
